COUNCILLOR GREGORY MALEBO TO RECEIVE A CIVIC FUNERAL
03 February 2020
ANC Ekurhuleni Caucus and all opposition parties paid tribute to Councillor Gregory Raymond Malebo in an Extra Ordinary Council Sitting at THE Germiston Council Chambers, OR Tambo Municipal Precinct, Germiston on Monday, 27 January 202.
Council sitting declared the funeral of Cllr Malebo a Civic Funeral and was laid to rest on Saturday, 01 February 2020.
Cllr Gregory Malebo fondly known as comrade Greg, passed on in the early hours in Hospital, Thursday (23 January 2020). He was an ANC Ward 89 Councillor who dedicated his entire life serving the community of Ekurhuleni.
Cde Greg was a genuine and true servant of the people. He contributed immensely in the liberation struggle of our country and was involved in various structures of the Mass Democratic Movement (MDM).
Amongst other structures, he served in the UDF with comrades such as Figo Madlala, Popo Molefe and many other cadres of our movement.
He joined the struggle for the liberation at a time when it was not fashionable to do so. Cde Greg belonged to the fearless generation of activists who were prepared to pay the ultimate price in pursuit of the liberation of our country.
The principle of telling this history about our fallen soldier is paramount; even though we may not be able cover everything in this address. This is because such giants are a rare breed.
African National Congress (ANC) as the leader of the society, Cde Greg a disciplined member of the ANC was able to demonstrate that in action. As a result, the community of Ekurhuleni, especially in Tembisa will forever be grateful for his role as a founding member in the formation of the local Civic Movement, as it later became TRA. The community continue to enjoy the benefits of the existence of such movement.
Cde Greg died with his boots on. He served two terms as a ward councillor, and served in the City Planning and Ethics Committees in the City of Ekurhuleni.
Cllr Greg was an extraordinary activist of the ANC, whom the ANC deployed in government. He served in various administrative responsibilities;
He was the first crop of the executive deployed as a MMC for Community Safety under the first Executive Mayor of Ekurhuleni, Cde Bavumile Vilakazi, between year 2000 and 2006.
This after the City amalgamated from nine (9) towns in the former East Rand into metropolitan municipality 20 years ago.
During his passing, he was serving Board Chairperson of Mathew Goniwe School of Governance and leadership.
This speaks volume about this giant’s work ethics and his values.
As the City of Ekurhuleni will be celebrating twenty of making a difference this year, we would have drawn more wisdom from Cde Greg. However, we will soldier on and continue to improve the lives of our people.
Death Be Not Proud!
The ANC Ekurhuleni Caucus wishes to convey its deepest condolences to his family, friends and the entire community of Ekurhuleni.
We wish to extend our gratitude to the family for having allowed us to share his life with the rest of the community of Ekurhuleni.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the Malebo family during this difficult and trying time.
