ANC CHIEF WHIP AWARDS LEARNERS AND TEACHERS AT TLAKULA HIGH
11 October 2019
As part of ANC Ekurhuleni Caucus’ community outreach programme, ANC Chief Whip in the City of Ekurhuleni Cllr Jongizizwe Dlabathi hosted the Sport and Academic awards at Tlakula High on Friday, 11 October 2019.
The purpose of the awards was to recognize and encourage teachers for their sterling contribution in education and learners for their outstanding performances in academics and sport for the year 2019.
In the opening, more than 1200 participants took part in a Fun Walk. The participants included the officials from the Office of The Chief Whip, Councillors, teachers, learners, parents, and School Governing Body members. The learners also participated in various sports such as netball, soccer, indigenous games, and cricket, including the aerobics.
The office of the Chief Whip adopted Tlakula High from Kwathema since 2017. The aim was to assist the school through academic support to improve its matric performance in Mathematics, Science and Accounting.
“We brought in a partner – Gondoana Mathematics to assist the school improve in Mathematics and Science, and we are optimistic that this year’s results will show a massive improvement. However, we want to call upon the parents to support the learners by playing an active role in their children education. We urge parents to take a keen interest by monitoring their children as they prepare to write their final exams,” said Dlabathi.
Cllr Dlabathi also invited the businesses to support the school, as the school will be celebrating 75 years next year.
“We want to call upon the local business to invest in the school, by improving its Infrastucture. The school was build 74 years ago; therefore, it clearly shows that there is a need for an intervention in maintenance and infrastructural development,” said Cllr Jongizizwe Dlabathi.
School Principal Nhlanhla Thembekwayo expressed her gratitude to the Office of the Chief Whip.
“We are happy that the office has adopted the school. We need such partners to assist us to produce the necessary skills that are required by our economy and with such partnership we believe we are now in position to produce a product that is expected by the country,” she said.
The learners and teachers were awarded with certificates, schools bags, medals and trophies.
Under 19 Soccer top goal scorer Njabulo Sibeko said, “I am motivated as an aspiring soccer player, and wish to thank my teachers for their support and Chief Whip for reviving sport in our school.”
ANC Caucus also wished well the class of 2019 in their final exams.
“We encourage learners to focus because every minute, every hour and every day is important for them. They must not despair on the basis that probably they were disturbed or did not cover some certain amount of work and seize the opportunity by passing their matric,” ANC Ekurhuleni Chief Whip said.
ANC Chief Whip in Ekurhuleni also advised learners to consider making the country’s TVET Colleges their preferred choice of institutions for training and studying.
“South Africa needs skills such as engineering, boiler making, construction and other technical skills. We encourage our learners to equally consider TVET Colleges to accumulate skills so that they can either get employed or use those skills to employ themselves by starting their own businesses,” Cllr Dlabathi said.
ANC Caucus will also take 172 Grade 11 learners to Ekurhuleni East College (Kwathema Campus) as part of educational tour to expose them to technical and vocational skills training offered by the institution.
“We strongly believe by ensuring that more young people are educated and have acquired necessary skills, that will benefit the municipality and youngster’s families through knowledge and skills they learn. They would then be empowered,” he concluded.
ANC Caucus in Ekurhuleni welcomed the State of the City Address delivered by the Executive Mayor Cllr Mzwandile Masina at the Germiston Council Chamber in OR Tambo Government Precinct Civic Centre – Germiston on Wednesday, 18 March 2020.
