As the ANC Ekurhuleni Caucus welcomes the Executive Mayor Cllr Mzwandile Masina’s first Quarter of 2018/19 Financial Year tabled at Germiston Council Chambers on 26 July 2018. The ANC Caucus is encouraged that through radical decision taken to ensure that more young people from across gain access to institutions of higher learning. After the 2016 local govern elections, the ANC led government increased the bursary allocation from R10 million to R100 million. This has become evident that more than 800 young people have been afforded an opportunity to pursue their studies. ANC Caucus strongly believes that by ensuring that more young are educated this will surely benefit the municipality and their families through the knowledge and skills as they would have been empowered.

Cindy Dube from Ward 85 is one many young people who took an opportunity to apply when the window was opened last year. She is now a student at Vaal University of Technology and studying towards National Diploma in Sports Management. Expressing her gratitude in a letter written to ANC Chief Whip Cllr Jongizizwe Dlabathi, she said, “today I am proud member of the Ekurhuleni bursary holder which I have to admit that it really saved me. If it was not for this bursary by now I would have been part of the statistics of varsity drop outs due to being able to pay for my fees”. In her first year, she was using a NSFAS but unfortunately she could not be funded due to certain complications.

“I was stressed and almost dropped out of school because I didn’t know how or who was going to pay for my fees. Fortunately, I got to know about the municipal bursary after my mother had attended a public meeting which was called by our Ward Councillor Sipho Sibiya of which Chief Whip was there too, where he shared the information. Through the Office of the Chief Whip, I then applied for the municipal bursary.” This was after Cidy’s unemployed mother took an opportunity to share this ordeal with Cllr Dlabathi. Cindy like many hundreds of young people who benefitted from municipal bursary, she had to remain positive and wait for a respond from the municipality.“I have received the bursary and they also invited me to attend a briefing session at Kempton Park where we were briefed about the bursary. Thank you Chief Whip for your assistance and thank you Ekurhuleni municipality as soon I will be a qualified Sports Manager” she concluded.
